International Day of Families: Theme this year is 'Families and Inclusive Societies'
International Day of Families this year is going to be observed with the theme "Families and Inclusive Societies" on May 15, announced the United Nation (UN).

According to the UN, the International Day of Families provides an opportunity 'to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting them'. The UN has urged the world community to organise workshops, conferences, rallies, radio and television programmes, newspaper articles and cultural programmes highlighting theme of this year.

"This year's observance will explore the role of families and family policies in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 16 in terms of promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development," stated the UN.

It was in 1993, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the International Year of the Family with an objective 'to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase the knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families'.

Currently, the UN's agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has a set of 17 goals aiming to eliminate poverty, discrimination, abuse and preventable deaths, address environmental destruction, and usher in an era of development for all people, everywhere.

The UN states that the families and family-oriented policies and programmes are vital for the achievement of many of the SDGs by the year 2030.
