International Roma Day observed across globe
The International Roma Day was observed in many cities of the world on April 8 to celebrate and showcase Romani culture and raise awareness of the issues facing Romani people as minority in many countries. In the United Kingdom, both in Glasgow and London, the community reportedly gathered to stage cultural performances and playing of their typical music to the delight of the onlookers.

The festivals of music and parades were held to celebrate International Roma Day in many European cities. The world leaders had been batting for protection of human rights of Romanies and treat them with compassion and respect. Appeals have been made repeatedly and improve their poor living conditions.

One may recall that the day was officially declared in 1990 in Serock of Poland.  The date was chosen in honour of the first major international meeting of Romani representatives in April month of 1971 in Chelsfield near London.

On the occasion of International Romani Day, Pope Francis greeted the Rom and Sinti present in Vatican City. He said, "I bid peace and harmony to those people who belong to these ancient peoples, and hope that each day might foster a culture of encounter, with the good will of knowing each other and respecting each other reciprocally," reported the Vatican News Service.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust stated, "European Roma and Sinti (Gypsies) were targeted for extermination under the Nazi regime and at least 200,000 were killed in concentration camps between 1939 and 1945. It is impossible to say exactly how many Roma and Sinti were murdered. However, it is estimated that about a quarter of the European population died during the Porrajmos."
