State of affairs regarding fair treatment and equal opportunities in schools through the eyes of a senior student
If you go by the some recent news reports regarding school students taking to streets or taking the extreme step of self-harm, one gets alarmed by the unfair treatment of schools and certification bodies to their students. The system promises as a policy the fair treatment and equal opportunity to all students irrespective of religion, caste, gender, and ability level.

Students now are realising that promises are not being fulfilled by the framers and custodians of the policy. Some educators including me see it as 'systemic crime' by not living up to promise and misuse of faith and power entrusted in the staff that runs the system.

Recently, I met a senior student disenchanted by his hefty-fee charging school and being harassed by the school management and staff including the counsellor who work as employees of the school. He further said that I do not find a single teacher that can be his role model. He poured his hurt heart out and added that often he felt, hopeless and dejected in school hours.

Although, one may not generalise the situation from the reaction of a single student who confided, nonetheless, it indicates what  schools should not do to alienate even the last student from the institution and make constant efforts to live up to their promise to students being serviced by them.

Here is the non-poem that described the feelings of a disenchanted student and his submission.

Help me, my teachers

To acquire

A purpose of life.


Be a role model

Befitting that purpose

And show me the path

One you have treaded.


Then leave me free

To follow that path

To reach the destination

To realise the shared purpose.


Sermonise me not, dear teacher

Like a fake sage on the stage

Chastise me not, dear counsellor

In the name of disciplining me

Rather yourself walk the talk.
